The children emerged from their families' mud huts as the light faded from the northern Ugandan sky to begin the long walk along dirt roads to Gulu, the nearest town. Toddlers with wide eyes held the hands of older children. Skinny adolescent boys and girls peered warily into roadside shadows. Some people walked up to seven miles.
They were on the move because they live in a world where armed men really do come out of the darkness to steal children, and their shambling daily trek to safety has become so routine that it has a name: "night commuters."
There are no reports of haunting officially but there is other type of horror and crimes in the country itself.
